Cheap Tablet Computer

Cheap tablet computer leads India's drive to tackle rural poverty

India's government has begun introducing a cheap British-built tablet computer to its schools and universities, saying its aim is to deliver modern technology to the countryside to help lift villagers out of poverty.
The London-based company Datawind, which won a four-way tender to build the tablets, is selling them to the Indian government for about £30 (2,290 rupees) each; subsidies from the government will reduce that to about 1,700 rupees for students and teachers. The computer, called Aakash, or "sky" in Hindi, is the latest in a series of "world's cheapest" innovations in India that include a 750 rupee (£10) water purifier and 100,000 rupee (£1,300) compact Nano cars and open-heart surgery operations. In comparison, the cheapest Apple iPad tablet costs £399 in the UK and $499 in the US, while Amazon's recently announced Kindle Fire will sell for $199 in the US. Datawind says it can make about 100,000 units a month at the moment, though that is not nearly enough to meet India's hope of getting its 220 million children online. The tablet has an 18cm (7in) screen, and uses a version of Google's Android operating system (though not using Google's services such as Maps). The first tranche in the pilot programme will, if successful, be expanded to 1m units, and Alia Khan, the vice-president of UK operations, said the company hopes in future to sell versions to government in India and through shops in India and the UK.India's human resources development minister, Kapil Sibal, called the announcement a message to all children of the world. "This is not just for us. This is for all of you who are disempowered," he said. "This is for all those who live on the fringes of society." Despite India's burgeoning technology industry and decades of robust economic growth, hundreds of thousands of citizens still have no electricity, let alone access to computers and information via the internet that could help farmers improve yields, business startups reach clients, or students qualify for university. The launch, attended by hundreds of students, some selected to help train others across the country in the tablet's use, followed five years of efforts to design a $10 computer that could bridge the country's vast digital divide. "People laughed, people called us lunatics," ministry official NK Sinha said. "They said we are taking the nation for a ride." Although the $10 goal was not achieved, the Aakash has a colour screen and provides word processing, web browsing and video conferencing. Despite hopes for a solar-powered version – important for India's energy-starved hinterlands – no such option is currently available. The Android 2.2-based device has two USB ports and 256 megabytes of RAM, and a touch-sensitive resistive screen. More expensive versions using "capacitative" screens, as found on more expensive tablets such as the iPad and Kindle, may become available later. Both Sibal and Datawind's chief executive, Suneet Singh Tuli, called for competition to improve the product and drive prices down further. "The intent is to start a price war. Let it start," Tuli said, inviting others to do the job better and break technological ground while still making a commercially viable product. Students at the launch were well briefed on the goal of providing tablets for the poor, although most in attendance already had access to computers at home or in their schools. As for the $10 goal, "let's dream and go in that direction. Let's start with that target and see what happens," he said. "A person learns quite fast when they have a computer at home," said Shashank Kumar, 21, a computer engineering student from Jodhpur, Bihar, who was one of five people selected in his northern state to travel to villages and demonstrate the device. "In just a few years people can even become hackers."
India, after raising literacy to about 78% from 12% when British rule ended, is now focusing on higher education with a 2020 goal of 30% enrolment. Today, only 7% of Indians graduate from high school.
"To every child in India, I carry this message. Aim for the sky and beyond. There is nothing holding you back," Sibal said, before distributing about 650 of the tablets to the students.

Biggest Catfish

Angler Jon Avery reels in biggest catfish ever caught by a Brit

A LUCKY angler told yesterday how he landed a record-breaking catfish weighing 17.5 STONE. Jonathan Avery, 31, hooked the 8ft 3in monster while on holiday in Spain. It took five men to haul it to the bank of the River Segre — and the 245lb specimen is believed to be the biggest catfish ever caught by a Brit. Jonathan, from Winscombe, Somerset, got his big bite after waiting 15 hours at Mequineza. He said: "We'd been there since dawn and were about to give up. I knew straight away it was a big one, and we realised it was a record when the fish wouldn't fit in the 8ft sling to carry it to the weighing scales." Tour guide Jason Ingley said: "I've seen big fish before but nothing like that — it was like something out of a cartoon."

SAMSUNG MV800

Samsung MV800 Camera Will Make You Flip Out

Remember Samsung’s DualView compact digital cameras that featured miniature LCD panels embedded in the front of the camera for taking accurate self-portrait shots? Today, Samsung has taken that philosophy to the next level with the introduction of the MV800. The Samsung MV800 is equipped with a 3.0” touch-screen Flip-out LCD display. However, this is not your typical horizontally revolving LCD–the Samsung MV800′s LCD flips up vertically a full 180 degrees to give shooters a 3-inch LCD view right above the lens for the ultimate self portraits. The Samsung MV800 will bring on a 16-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor, 26mm wide 5x optical zoom Schneider-KREUZNACH lens and offer full touchscreen LCD operation. 720p HD video recording in the MPEG-4 format is noted in the release, and I assume it will be 30fps. Fun-filled features riddle the MV800, starting with Live Panorama, which enables the shooter to preview the entire shot by pressing halfway on the shutter button and moving the camera in the intended direction. There will also be 12 Magic Frames providing whimsical backgrounds for portraits, as well as Picture-In-Picture actions for embedding one picture into another. But the Samsung MV800 just keeps getting sillier with a new Funny Face filter library that distorts faces similarly to that of Apple’s Photo Booth. 14 artistic effects will also be included, showcasing the new Water Paint mode for rendering subject matter in a water color style. There’s even a Pose Guide to teach models how to pose and a Storyboard Maker for creating a digital scrapbook of that scandalous night on the town. The Samsung MV800 is set to ship mid September for $280.

iPhone 4S

Apple's iPhone Letdown

New CEO Tim Cook unveiled the first iPhone of the post–Steve Jobs era. After 15 months of waiting, all we get is a refreshed iPhone 4, writes Dan Lyons.

Before today’s big event at Apple was even over, the company’s stock had plunged 10 bucks—which tells you all you need to know about how people are responding to what Apple introduced.

There is, instead, a refreshed version of the iPhone 4, called the iPhone 4S, which looks exactly like the iPhone 4 but has new and improved guts, including a speedier processor, a better camera, and a new voice-navigation system called Siri that lets you do loads of things with voice commands. That last part, Siri, is pretty amazing—but overall, today’s event has to be a disappointment to hard-core Apple fans who have spun themselves into a frenzy lately with speculation that the company was about to introduce an entirely redesigned device, which people have been referring to as the iPhone 5.The main reason everyone was expecting more was that it has been 15 months since Apple introduced the iPhone 4, and that’s a long time in the world of Apple. In the past Apple has rolled out a new phone once a year, in the summer. This time, when summer came and went, Apple fans started thinking it must be because the company had something super-special up its sleeve. Apple’s strategy seems to be to push older iPhones down in price and try to go for market share rather than be on the bleeding edge of design Instead, it appears that Apple is content to keep selling what it has. And why not? The iPhone 4 is the best-selling smartphone on the planet, and sales have continued to accelerate despite its relatively long lifespan. Last quarter Apple sold 20 million of them.  Apple’s strategy seems to be to push older iPhones down in price and try to go for market share rather than be on the bleeding edge of design. As the new iPhone 4S rolls out, with three models priced at $199 (for 16 gigabytes of storage), $299 (32GB) and $399 (64GB), Apple has slashed prices on its older models. The iPhone 4 with 16GB of storage will cost $99. And the iPhone 3GS with 8GB of storage, which is still a really good smartphone, will be free (with a contract).

Phuket Vegetarian Festival

Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2011 Begins

Ritual Body Piercing at Thailand's Vegetarian Festival

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is not for those with a light stomach or those that cringe at the sight of blood. Between Sept. 27 and Oct. 5, spectators at the Phuket Vegetarian Festival will see devotes puncture their cheeks with knives, walk over hot coal, and commit other acts of self-mutilation. According to legend, the event began in 1825 when a traveling opera company became ill while visiting the Kathu district of Phuket, Thailand. The company was visiting from China to perform for miners, most of which were Chinese. In order to beat the illness, the company followed a strict vegetarian diet in honor of emperor gods Kiew Ong Tai Teh and Yok Ong Sone Teh. Many locals yearned to learn more about the miracle cure. Thus the Phuket Vegetarian Festival was born. It's held in coordination with the Chinese calendar of the first evening of the ninth lunar month and lasts for 10 days. Most devotees refrain from eating meat for at least three days during the festival. They believe that the absence of meat will bring good health and peace of mind. Of all the aspects of the festival, foreigners are most shocked by the self-inflicted torture. Ma Song, or entranced horses, are the devotees whom gods enter at the festival. They perform acts of self-mutilation in order to bring the community good luck, by shifting the evil onto themselves.  Fireworks and drums can also be heard throughout the festival to drive the evil spirits away. The festival does have 10 rules which festivalgoers should abide by including the use of clean kitchen utensils (thankfully what goes in someone's cheek doesn't go in your food) and refraining from alcohol. Those who are pregnant are forbidden to attend. While this isn't the animal rights hippie festival many expect when they hear "Vegetarian Festival," those who are traveling can partake in amazing Thai street food. Look for the vendors with a yellow flag, which signals there food has been cooked without meat. Although, after watching someone stab an umbrella through their cheek, it may take a while for an appetite to come back.
